Breaking free from internalised oppression

In our previous post, we explored how we internalise oppressive power structures and the profound impact this has on our lives. Now, let’s focus on the journey towards liberation. Breaking free from internalised oppression is not just a personal endeavour but a collective one. Together, we can dismantle these invisible chains and create a world where everyone can thrive.

Steps towards liberation

Conscious awareness: The first step towards liberation is recognising the internalised oppression within ourselves. This involves a critical examination of personal beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours. Engaging with diverse perspectives, educating ourselves about systemic inequalities, and reflecting on personal experiences are crucial in developing this awareness. It's about asking ourselves, “Whose voice is this really?” and challenging the internalised narratives that hold us back.

Community support: Building and participating in supportive communities can provide the encouragement and solidarity needed to challenge internalised oppression. These communities offer a space for shared experiences, collective healing, and mutual empowerment. They also serve as a counterbalance to dominant societal narratives, providing alternative models of identity and success. Find your tribe, those who lift you up and remind you of your worth.

Challenging norms: Actively challenging oppressive norms and structures, both within ourselves and in society, is essential. This can involve speaking out against injustice, advocating for equitable policies, and supporting movements that seek to dismantle systemic inequalities. On a personal level, it means embracing our true identity and aspirations, free from the constraints of internalised oppression. It's about being bold, taking up space, and refusing to shrink ourselves to fit societal expectations.

Continuous learning and unlearning: Liberation is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning and unlearning. It involves questioning long-held beliefs, staying informed about social justice issues, and being open to new ideas and perspectives. By committing to this lifelong journey, we can progressively shed the internal chains of oppression and contribute to a more just and equitable world. Remember, growth is a process, and every step forward is a victory.

The power of collective action

Breaking free from internalised oppression is not just about individual change; it’s about collective action. When we come together to challenge and dismantle oppressive structures, we amplify our impact. By supporting one another and working towards a common goal, we can create a society where everyone is free to be their authentic selves.

Celebrate progress: It’s important to acknowledge and celebrate our progress, both individually and collectively. Every time we challenge an oppressive norm, support a marginalised voice, or advocate for change, we are contributing to a better world. Celebrate these victories, no matter how small, and use them as fuel for the journey ahead.

Embrace intersectionality: Recognise that our struggles are interconnected. The fight against oppression is not one-dimensional; it encompasses race, gender, class, sexuality, and more. Embracing intersectionality means acknowledging and addressing the multiple layers of discrimination and privilege that exist. By standing in solidarity with all marginalised groups, we strengthen our collective power.

Together, we can dismantle the internal and external barriers that keep us small. Let’s continue this journey towards liberation, supporting and uplifting each other along the way. The path may be challenging, but the destination—a world where everyone can thrive—is worth every step.
